Sunscreen works by blocking and absorbing UV rays through physical and chemical particles. Physical particles like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide work like a shield and reflect UV radiation. Chemical ingredients (oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, octnoxate) in sunscreen react with UV radiation before it penetrates our skin absorbing the rays and releasing the energy as heat. Many sunscreens contain ingredients that only block UVB rays, providing insufficient protection against UVA rays. Sun protection factor or SPF refers to how much longer it takes UVB rays to redden our skin with sunscreen compared without sunscreen. SPF 15 means it will take 15 times longer for the skin to burn.
Survey data suggests that the majority of Americans do not apply sunscreen daily throughout the course of the year. Current recommendations are that everyone use sunscreen because just about anyone can develop skin cancer regardless of age, gender, or race. In terms of the sunscreen, most dermatologists suggest broad spectrum protection (UVA & UVB), SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance. Other recommendations are to seek shade (especially between 10am-2pm), wear protective clothing, use extra caution around snow, water, sand, and avoid tanning beds. Sunscreen should be used daily even on cloudy days. Most people only apply 25-50 percent of the recommended amount. It is important to apply enough to cover all exposed skin and 15 minutes before going outside. Don’t forget to protect your lips, feet, neck, ears, and eyelids. Reapply every 2 hours especially after swimming or sweating.
Creams are best for dry skin and the face. Gels are good for hairy areas and sticks around the eyes.
Spray sunscreen may be more prone to application error especially inadequate coverage and strong winds. Typical body coverage requires 1 ounce of spray sunscreen and it has to be rubbed in. It should not be sprayed around your face and mouth.
Remember that the point of sunscreen is to protect against the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. These effects include, wrinkling, premature aging, skin cancer, and sunburn.
